The National Health Insurance Fund of Hungary (in Hungarian: Nemzeti Egészségbiztosítási Alapkezelő, NEAK) plays the central role in the financing mechanism of the Hungarian health care system. Its main tasks include everything associated with the financing of healthcare, medicines and medical aids.
It is important to know that NEAK only finances the services of the health institutions and facilities that have contracts with it. NEAK not only manages and coordinates financing but is also involved in the planning of health care and operating budgets and the preparation of the annual accounts. NEAK also comments on, evaluates and contributes to the development of health insurance concepts.
How can NEAK help you?
NEAK provides basic information on health insurance, insurance status and waiting lists, as well as information on health care abroad on request.
You should contact NEAK if you are planning to go abroad for medical treatment.
NEAK’s coordination department should also be contacted for information on prescription claims and data management.
Attention! It is not NEAK but the government offices that are responsible for the following:
- applying for and issuing a National Health Insurance Card (TAJ);
- applying for a European Health Insurance Card;
- settlement of a health insurance claim;
- application for a public health insurance card;
- registration for electronic administration.
